Out of the 3 popular free ones (AVG Free Edition, AntiVir Personal Edition,
and avast! 4 Home Edition);
avast! 4 Home Edition performs the
best in terms of detection rates.
The newest version seems to be more effective with new monitoring features.
(The problem is, it tends to eat alot of RAM. This can be reduced by disabling
monitoring features you don't use...If you don't use chat programs, disable
monitoring of that.)
Otherwise, consider a paid AV solution.
